Sandy lives in a half-house. There are quite a few of these to be found in towns with a mining heritage.

She heats with wood, and has a gas wall heater for backup. |

This is the back of the house. Off to the right, you can see the little addition. That's the bathroom, and her hot water pipes are in the crawl space underneath.

It was built on posts, with particle board walls, and this (aging) insulation. In winter when Sandy's pipes would freeze, she'd run a hose over from the neighbor's house.

|
She forestalled that situation as much as she could by hanging this heater in the crawl space. 1500 watts blasting away at winter, averaging an extra $30/month. |

This photo is after the fact, when we'd already started insulating with fiberglass and foam board.

Here is the door to the crawl space.

Inside, Sandy is remodeling. She hadn't put the floor trim up yet, so we filled the gap between the floor and wall with spray foam,

and nailed on some floor trim. |
